Program Overview


Praktikum Mediengestaltung

The Praktikum Mediengestaltung is a university program led by Prof. Heinrich Hußmann, Albrecht Schmidt, Arnd Vitzthum, and Enrico Rukzio. The program has an extent of 4 SWS.


Program Structure

  • The program consists of three themes, with two conducted in English and one in German.
  • Participants will produce a multimedia presentation and develop a concept.
  • The program involves collecting and processing raw materials, such as video, photos, text, and audio, and implementing the presentation.
  • Group work is a key component, with approximately 5 persons per team, and teams work independently with regular meetings.

Themes

  • Thema 1: User Interfaces - a brief history
    • Supervised by Albrecht Schmidt
    • Creation of a multimedia history book on "Human Computer Interaction"
    • Includes videos, photos, interviews, and concept and storyboard development
    • Presentation will be implemented in Flash for WWW and DVD
  • Thema 2: Vorstellung des Studienganges Medieninformatik
    • Supervised by Arnd Vitzthum
    • Creation of a multimedia presentation with a high video component
    • Planning and execution of a multimedia project from the specification sheet to the finished CD/DVD or web presence
    • Use of suitable authoring tools like Macromedia Flash or Director
  • Thema 3: Erstellung eines Konzeptvideos
    • Supervised by Enrico Rukzio
    • Focuses on the simplicity project, aiming to simplify the complexity of increasing mobile devices, services, and networks for users
    • The simplicity device (like a USB stick or Java card) contains user data and preferences, adapting services and networks to the user when inserted into different terminals
    • The main task is to create concept videos (mock-ups) visualizing the use of the simplicity device in typical scenarios and principle functional processes using animations (Flash)

Organizational Details

  • The program includes regular meetings and the possibility of borrowing equipment such as cameras and digital cameras.
  • Reserved times for groups in the media lab (room 208) are part of the organizational structure.
  • Participants are expected to work independently in groups, with support from the supervisors.

Schedule

  • Introduction meeting: April 29, 2004, at 14:00 (c.t.) in room 107, Amalienstr. 17, where participants are divided into the three program themes.
  • Presentation of screenplays/storyboards: May 13, 2004, at 14:00 (c.t.) in room 107.
  • Presentation of first results (raw material, prototypes, etc.): June 3, 2004, at 14:00 (c.t.) in room 107.
  • Presentation of progress: July 22, 2004, at 14:00 (c.t.) in room 107, following a request from groups 1-3 to reschedule.

  • Group 1: May 14-17 (morning), June 19-20
  • Group 3: May 20-23, June 17, 24, 27
  • Group 2: July 12 (camera, tripod), July 27-28 (camera, tripod)
  • Group X: August 6 (camera)

This program is designed to provide participants with hands-on experience in multimedia production, concept development, and teamwork, under the guidance of experienced supervisors.
