Introduction to the Project Competence Digital Museum

The Project Competence Digital Museum is a program offered by the Institut für Informatik, with a duration of 90 hours and 3 ECTS credits. It is part of the module P 18 (BA MI PStO 2022).

Description of the Deutsches Museum Digital

The Deutsches Museum (DM) in Munich is one of the largest and most visited technical museums worldwide, with a mission to convey historical and current technologies, as well as fundamental scientific research and findings. The Deutsches Museum Digital (DMD) is a department within the museum that focuses on the central aspects of digitization with a user focus. Its core task is the creation, aggregation, management, and dissemination of digital assets related to the museum's object collections, library, and archive.

Themes and Areas of Focus

The program offers various fields of activity, including the enrichment and preparation of existing raw data using methods and processes from language processing and the semantic web. The data can be made accessible both qualitatively, in the form of virtual exhibitions or other curatorial approaches, and quantitatively, in the form of statistical evaluations and data mining. The interplay between the real and digital worlds with VR/AR/MR has also been explored by the DMD in various contexts. Current AI developments promise new ways and potentials in the creative handling of knowledge transfer and audience appeal.

What the Program Offers

The DMD offers committed students the opportunity to complete an internship in an exciting and interdisciplinary environment. As part of the internship, students will gain insights into various topic areas, ranging from object digitization and data preparation to interactive applications and innovative AI-based approaches, and will support the team in developing application cases for research and museum work.

Possible Areas of Activity

  • 3D modeling and animation
  • Collaboration on 3D scans, virtual reality, or augmented reality projects
  • Data preparation and visualization of digital collections
  • Programming of interactive applications and creation of content for the DMD portal
  • Support in the area of usability and UX/UI design
