Program Overview
Bachelor Media Informatics
The bachelor's program in Media Informatics consists of 180 ECTS credits. The standard time of study is six semesters. Successful graduates of the Bachelor's program will be awarded the academic degree "Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)" by the Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Statistics.
Study Contents
The study of media informatics is a variation of the study of computer science. With mathematics and the basics of computer science, the classical elements of a computer science study form an important component. Media informatics is more application-oriented than computer science; this means that more emphasis is put on the development of applications.
The program provides an overview of multimedia technologies such as the coding, processing, and distribution of audio-visual content. To achieve this, the course of study consistently integrates content from other disciplines. It focuses less on the application of existing software for media processing and more on understanding the principles behind it and the ability to develop multimedia software by oneself.
Study Focus
The study focus of the bachelor's program in Media Informatics is:
- Computer science (approx. 45%): Basic education, e.g., software development, computer architecture, operating systems, databases.
- Multimedia (approx. 25%): Among others, media technology, computer graphics, human-machine interaction, digital media.
- Application expertise (approx. 20%): Application expertise, internships, theses.
- Mathematics (about 10%): Linear Algebra, Analysis.
Application Subjects
Students of media informatics must choose one of the three application subjects in the bachelor's program:
- Media Design
- In cooperation with the Institute for Art Education, including painting, drawing, multimedia design on the computer.
- An application folder with artistic works is required.
- Media Management
- In cooperation with the School of Management, including basics of business administration, digital media business, project seminar on new media.
- Human-Computer Interaction
- In cooperation with the Faculty of Psychology & Education and Institute of Statistics, including Basic Concepts of Psychology, Human Factors in Engineering, Interaction Design.
What is Media Informatics?
Media informatics is described by students as:
- "Computer science with more fun."
- "While traditional computer science focuses on communication between computers, media informatics looks at communication between people and computers."
- "It is not about media or media content, but about concepts for the processing and distribution of media content."
- "You will learn to acquire things for yourself and to familiarize yourself with new tools. It is not a training where you learn to use certain programs."
- "Why media? Digital media use technical media to create new social media."
How the Study Program Works
The Bachelor course of studies in Media Informatics can be started in the winter semester. The program is structured as a consecutive Bachelor/Master program. In the bachelor's program, the timetable is largely fixed. The Master's program, on the other hand, offers greater freedom of choice and is more scientifically oriented.
