DMD Program
The DMD Program is a professional program that leads to the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in dental medicine, including both theoretical and clinical training.
Selection of OHSU Dental Students
Students are selected on the basis of demonstrated scholastic ability in both required and elective courses. Quality, quantity, and rigor of courses taken per academic term are also considered. Performance on the DAT is considered in addition to the applicant's personal statement. Letters of evaluation are screened for personal qualities and demonstrated interest in and knowledge of the profession of dentistry. Demonstration of leadership, community service, and experience in the field are highly valued, as well as extracurricular activities, employment history, and research experience.
Residency Requirements
In Oregon, instruction fees at publicly supported four-year colleges and universities are higher for nonresident students than for resident students. The School of Dentistry recognizes that its primary obligation is to provide an opportunity in dental education for residents of Oregon. Selection, as far as residency is concerned, is based on the following order of priorities:
- Oregon residency
- Residency in the western states participating in the program of the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE): Alaska, Arizona, Hawaii, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, and Wyoming
- Residency in the remaining states
- Canadians, and current F-1 visa holders from all other countries
Establishing Residency
The purpose for establishing residency in Oregon should not be primarily for educational reasons. Generally, one should reside and be employed in the state of Oregon at least one year prior to matriculation. If enrolled in classes in the state of Oregon, one should not be enrolled in more than eight semester or quarter hours.
