Undergraduate Program in Philosophy

The undergraduate program in philosophy at Louisiana State University provides students with rigorous training in ethics, history of philosophy, and logic. Majoring in Philosophy

All LSU undergraduate philosophy majors receive a comprehensive education in philosophy, with a focus on ethics, history of philosophy, and logic. The program is designed to be interdisciplinary, and many philosophy majors also major in another discipline.

Concentration in Law, Ethics, and Social Justice

Philosophy Major Requirements

The philosophy major requires a total of 27 hours, consisting of nine PHIL courses.

• PHIL 2020: Ethics or PHIL 3052 (Moral Philosophy)
• PHIL 2033 or PHIL 2053: History of Ancient and Medieval Philosophy
• PHIL 2035: History of Modern Philosophy

PHIL Electives

• Three courses (9 hours) at the 3000- or 4000-level
• Two courses (6 hours) at the 4000-level

Philosophy Major with a Concentration in Law, Ethics, and Social Justice

The philosophy major with a concentration in Law, Ethics, and Social Justice requires a total of 30 hours, consisting of ten PHIL courses.

• PHIL 2010: Symbolic Logic
• PHIL 2020: Ethics or PHIL 3052 (Moral Philosophy)
