Program Overview

Introduction to the Highly Accelerated Scholar Initiative

The Highly Accelerated Scholar Initiative (HASI) is a program designed for academically gifted primary and secondary students who are ready for college-level coursework at an atypical age. This initiative is offered by the Indiana University Indianapolis SPAN Division, providing college course enrollment opportunities to pre-college aged students through a variety of early access programs.

Eligibility and Enrollment Process

To be eligible for the HASI program, students must demonstrate strong academic success in one or more subject areas and have exhausted high school level coursework in those areas. The enrollment process involves the following steps:

  1. Initial meeting with the IU Indianapolis SPAN Division director and the child's parent or guardian to discuss the child's academic abilities and potential for acceleration.
  2. A second interview with the child present to assess their readiness for college immersion.
  3. Application and admission to IU Indianapolis through the SPAN Division HASI, followed by placement exams and a meeting with a SPAN academic advisor.
  4. Interview with the departmental chair or other appointed university administration to determine course options.
  5. Orientation and enrollment services provided by the SPAN Division.
  6. Close monitoring of student progress, including monthly check-ins and a midterm evaluation.
  7. Upon successful completion of the first course, discussion of other course enrollment opportunities, and advancement to higher SPAN Division programs after completing a minimum of 9 credit hours.

Program Details

  • The HASI program is designed for students under 15 years of age who demonstrate academic readiness for college-level coursework.
  • Documentation of the child's ability to read and write at the college level is required prior to enrollment.
  • Students who have not been previously identified as gifted or highly accelerated may be recommended for summer enrichment camps or other gifted programs.
  • The program includes regular assessments and evaluations to ensure the student's success and readiness for continued acceleration.

Academic Opportunities

The HASI program provides students with the opportunity to enroll in college-level courses, with close monitoring and support to ensure their success. Upon completion of the program, students may advance to higher SPAN Division programs, providing greater enrollment options and flexibility.
