Second Degree Accelerated BSN Track

The Second Degree Accelerated BSN track is a pre-licensure track for those who have a bachelor's degree in another field but do not have a prior nursing degree. It requires four semesters of full-time study, including summer sessions.


Eligibility to Apply

To be eligible for the Second Degree Accelerated BSN track, applicants must:


  • Be admitted to IU Indianapolis as a degree-seeking student
  • Have graduated from a 120-credit hour accredited baccalaureate degree program in a non-nursing field
  • Meet all courses required for admission to the School of Nursing

Steps to Apply

  1. Be admitted to IU Indianapolis as a degree-seeking student: Provide documentation of at least a baccalaureate degree with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.7 on a 4.0 scale.
  2. Complete all required prerequisite courses:
  • Anatomy (with in-person lab)
  • Physiology (with in-person lab)
  • Microbiology (with in-person lab)
  • English Composition
  • Introductory Psychology
  • Introductory Sociology
  • Life & Physical Sciences/Math courses
  • Statistics course (300 or 400 level)
  • Communications course
  • Cultural Understanding course
  • Arts & Humanities course
  • Open Electives
  1. Submit application to IU School of Nursing: The application for the ABSN program is only available online and must be submitted by specified published dates.

Academic Criteria

  • Minimum 2.7 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale for the first bachelor's degree
  • Earn a 3.0 GPA for the 41 credits of required general education coursework
  • Obtain an admissions planning sheet from an academic advisor
  • Minimum grade of C (2.0) in each required BSN general education course
  • Admission decisions based on grades earned in prerequisite courses

Disqualifying Factors

Students with a history of criminal convictions may be precluded from admission if they are not able to be placed in clinical settings.
