Program Overview


Indiana Law Enforcement Academy Instructor Development

This course is designed to equip law enforcement professionals with the skills needed to become effective and engaging instructors.


Course Description

The course emphasizes practical teaching strategies rooted in adult learning principles, covering key areas such as communication techniques, lesson planning, instructional design, and the use of training aids. Participants gain hands-on experience through video-recorded presentations and peer feedback, culminating in a final instructional session developed using digital tools. Upon successful completion, enrollees receive a formal credential that qualifies them to deliver certified instruction within Indiana law enforcement agencies.


Course Details

  • Duration: February 9-13, 2025
  • Time: 8:00 am to 5:00 pm each day
  • Location: IUPD Ott Building, Conference Room A215, 922 Indiana Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46202
  • Parking: Available at Lockefield Garage (915 Wishard Blvd) and Wilson Street Garage (811 N. Wilson St.)
  • Course Fee: $275 (includes course materials)
  • Materials Needed:
    • Laptop with charger
    • USB thumb drive
    • One ream of 8.5" x 11" copy paper

Eligibility Criteria

To enroll, participants must be a full-time, paid police officer with at least three years of law enforcement experience and a high school diploma or GED. These requirements may be waived under emergency circumstances by the Law Enforcement Training Board (LETB) through a formal request to the Deputy Director of Peace Officer's Standards and Training (POST).


Instructors

  • Major Stephen N. Luce: Director for Public Safety Education, overseeing the IU Police Academy and the IUPD Cadet Officer Program.
  • Sergeant Amanda Botts: Training Coordinator, with roles including training coordinator and Cadet Officer Program coordinator at IU Indianapolis, and an IU Police Academy instructor and academy staff member.
