Introduction to IU Online Class Connect

IU Online Class Connect is a process that allows a student enrolled at one IU campus to register for an online class offered at another IU campus without having to go through intercampus transfer. This mechanism enables the sharing of faculty resources and unique classes among participating campuses, supporting the offering of classes required for collaborative academic programs and increasing the availability of online classes to students.

Participating Campuses

Most classes in IUOCC are shared among the five IU-managed regional campuses: East, Kokomo, Northwest, South Bend, and Southeast. Bloomington and IUPUI currently share classes in IUOCC in a limited way to support specific collaborative academic programs.

Eligible Class Lists

There are two types of Eligible Class Lists: the Collaborative Eligible Class List (ECL) and the General Eligible Class List (ECL).

• The Collaborative ECL contains the list of courses that must be shared in IUOCC to support collaborative degrees.
• The General ECL consists of primarily lower-division online courses shared among the regional campuses only to improve the availability of general education and elective courses for regional campus students.

Eligibility Criteria for General ECL

To be included on the General ECL, a class must meet certain criteria:

• The class must be 100% online (instruction mode = "OA").
• The class must be offered by IU (Purdue SWT classes are excluded).
• The class cannot be labor studies, nursing, or in another subject area where classes are manually copied into each campus schedule of classes under different agreements.
• The class must not be in a subject area that is negotiated/managed by a collaborative degree committee.
• The class must be in a standard regular session, 1st 8-week session, or 2nd 8-week session (in fall and spring terms).
• The course requisites and/or Enrollment Requirement Groups (ERGs) must match across all regional campuses approved to offer that course.
• The class cannot require department or instructor consent.
• The class cannot have other specific academic structure issues that can cause problems for students at other campuses.

Creation of IUOCC Eligible Class Lists

• The Collaborative degree committees must "freeze" their planned offerings for the upcoming fall semester by February 1st, and for the upcoming Spring and Summer semesters by June 1st.
• The General ECL review process begins in mid-February (for Fall) and mid-September (for Spring/Summer).

IUOCC During Summer Session

Yes, IUOCC happens during summer session, but in a limited way. Summer offerings are part of the negotiated courses agreed to by the collaborative degree faculty committees.

Class Replication

Not all classes that meet the eligibility criteria will be replicated to all other regional campuses. The course must be in the receiving campus's list of approved course catalog offerings, unless it is part of an approved collaborative academic program.

Class Size and Section Restrictions

There are rules regarding IUOCC class sizes and the number of sections of a course that can be replicated. Each IUOCC class section can have a maximum enrollment capacity of up to 40 students.

Faculty Control Over IUOCC Classes

Faculty, in consultation with their deans, may request to have their own classes excluded from IUOCC by contacting their campus EVCAA when the General Eligible Class list is sent out for review.

Student Awareness of IUOCC Classes

For all online courses replicated through IUOCC, a standard class note will identify which campus is the Campus of Instruction. All IUOCC classes that are part of a collaborative academic program will also contain a standard class note indicating this.

Accessing IUOCC Class Lists

Each campus registrar has a list of eligible IUOCC classes. Classes on the Collaborative ECL are expected to be placed into IUOCC prior to the start of registration.

Alternative Options for Taking Online Classes

If a class is not included on the Collaborative or General Eligible Class Lists, students can still take online classes from another campus through a special Course Share Agreement or by completing an intercampus transfer.
