PROGRAMA VOE

Improving Access to Educational Resources

A new association has been formed between IUPUI, Ivy Tech Community College, and the Consulate of Mexico in Indianapolis, collaborating on the Ventanilla de Orientacion Educativa (VOE) program.

Through this program, Mexican citizens living in the United States can obtain information about educational opportunities in the country and in Mexico by visiting the Consulate of Mexico office (331 South East Street, Indianapolis, Indiana).

Program Goals

The objective of the program is to help decrease the disparity in educational achievement and strengthen relationships and commitment in the communities where Mexicans live in the country.

  • Improve the educational levels of Mexicans in Indiana by providing information about educational opportunities and workshops or conferences on topics related to higher education.
  • Provide information to Consulate visitors about university admissions, financial aid, scholarships, and the Office of Coordinated Programs at IUPUI.
  • Contribute to improving the educational level of Mexican adults.
  • Promote learning and use of the English language among Mexicans.
  • Promote the use of new information technologies among Mexicans.
  • Distribute information about educational programs developed by the Mexican government for Mexican citizens abroad.

Data Insights

Recent data from the United States Census Bureau details the educational levels of Mexican citizens, compared to other immigrants and adults born in the United States:

Mexican Adults in the USA (Aged 25 and Older)

  • 45% have a high school diploma
  • 7% have a bachelor's degree or higher

All Immigrant Adults in the United States

  • 72% have a high school diploma
  • 31% have a bachelor's degree

Adults Born in the United States

  • 92% have a high school diploma

Through this association, IUPUI seeks to strengthen its support for Latin American families and students who have aspirations for higher education, according to Cindy Gil, Director of Latino Affairs at the Office of Community Engagement.
