Program Overview


General Surgery Residency Program

The General Surgery Residency Program at Indiana University School of Medicine is led by national leaders in surgical education. The program develops residents' skills to care for both simple and complex surgical patients in a supportive learning environment, fostering competency and increased autonomy in the operating room.


Program Overview

Clinical experiences are provided by IU Health, Eskenazi Health, and the VA medical center health systems, offering comprehensive exposure to the breadth and depth of surgical practice. Graduates seamlessly transition to competitive subspecialty fellowships or private practice, whether in urban or rural settings.

Resident Research and Professional Development

Residents can participate in dedicated research and professional development, with the option to obtain an advanced degree from Indiana University at no cost. This includes master's degrees in education, public health, clinical research, and biostatistics.


Global Health and AMPATH

The Global Health Pathway is open to all specialty residents, offering local and overseas electives with dedicated faculty mentors. The AMPATH-Kenya initiative invites residents to engage in a life-changing and career-changing one or two-month elective at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
