Introduction to the Tan Fellowship Program

The Tan Fellowship program is a collaborative effort between the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Xiamen University's College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. The program was established in 2016 and provides funding for students from Xiamen University to pursue a doctoral degree in food science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst.

Program Description

The Tan Fellowship program is named after Dr. Chee-Teck Tan, a renowned food scientist and alumnus of Xiamen University. The program aims to support students from Xiamen University's College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering in pursuing a doctoral degree in food science at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. The fellowship provides a stipend of $22,000 per year, as well as health insurance, for a maximum of four years. Tuition and course fees are also waived.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Tan Fellowship program, applicants must:

• Be a full-time student at Xiamen University's College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
• Have an interest in food science (prior research experience in food science is not required)
• Meet the English language proficiency requirements (minimum IELTS score of 6.5 or TOEFL score of 80)
• Have a strong research potential

Application Procedure

To apply for the Tan Fellowship program, students must:

1. Obtain approval from their academic advisor
2. Submit an application form to the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering's International Affairs Office by October 26th
3. Provide supporting documents, including a personal statement, research interests, and three letters of recommendation
4. Participate in a video interview with the University of Massachusetts Amherst
5. Submit formal application materials to the University of Massachusetts Amherst's Graduate School by February 1st

Additional Requirements

Students who are selected for the Tan Fellowship program must:

• Meet the academic requirements of the University of Massachusetts Amherst's doctoral program in food science
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0
• Make satisfactory progress towards their degree

Program Duration

The Tan Fellowship program is available for a maximum of four years, contingent upon satisfactory progress towards the degree.
