Program Overview
The Applied Linguistics, B.A./M.A. program at Georgia State University is an interdisciplinary field of research and instruction that integrates aspects of fields such as linguistics, English, teacher education, speech communication, psychology, sociology, and anthropology into a distinct field focused on issues related to the learning and teaching of a second/foreign language, such as the teaching and learning of English as a second language (ESL).

- Admissions Requirements: Incoming bachelor's students will apply through Undergraduate Admissions. After acceptance to Georgia State, students interested in a dual-degree program should discuss the requirements for eligibility with the dual-degree program coordinator at the start of their sophomore year.
- Tuition: Students completing graduate coursework while an undergraduate will pay the undergraduate tuition rate. Dual-degree students accepted into the M.S. program may receive Graduate Assistantships which come with tuition waivers for graduate program enrollment.
Dual-Degree Program Eligibility
The Dual B.S./M.S. Program in Applied Linguistics is available to undergraduate majors who maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5. Students may apply at any time once they have taken between 30-80 credit hours.

- A graduate admission application fee when applying to the graduate program
- Up to 12 credit hours can count toward completion of both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in applied linguistics (double credits)
Careers
Many graduates teach overseas or in language programs such as Intensive English Programs in major universities in Georgia and other parts of the country. Students specialize in areas such as:
- Second language teacher education
- Second language acquisition theory and practice
- Classroom-oriented teacher development
- Structure and use of English
- Intercultural communication theory and research
- ESL/EFL materials research and development
- Sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and discourse analysis
- Corpus linguistics (working with language databases)
Graduate Outcomes
Graduates of the B.A./M.A. programs in Applied Linguistics will be competent language analysts, effective communicators in a variety of cultural contexts, and critical thinkers, capable of considering multiple perspectives and recognizing their own and others' biases.
Registration for Graduate Courses
Dual-degree program students must meet with their academic advisor and dual-degree faculty coordinator to discuss graduation plans, review remaining degree requirements, and explore graduate course enrollment options. Students must fill out the Graduate Course Approval Form and email it to the designated contact before registering for graduate courses.
