Program Overview
Introduction to the Anthropology Program
The Anthropology program at Georgia State University provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human beings and their primate relatives, offering a perspective on the nature of humanity over time and in different environments.
Program Description
Anthropology is concerned with biological aspects of humans and other primates in the past and present, material culture and investigation into past lifeways, contemporary cultures, and the complexities of language and communication. The Department of Anthropology has a strong and growing program with faculty representing all four of these subfields.
Research Areas
Faculty members have research activities on four continents, including North and South America, Europe, and Africa. Several faculty members have expertise and research projects in Latin America. Undergraduate and graduate students benefit from the experience and ongoing research of faculty working in these areas.
Program Details
- Admissions Requirements: High school seniors and recent graduates apply using the Common Application. International students and transfer students have specific application processes.
- Curriculum: The curriculum is comprised of 18 hours of courses appropriate to the major, no more than one language or linguistics course, and 27 hours of major courses.

- Duration: Students can complete the program in 4 years.
- Location: Classes are held on the Atlanta Campus.
Careers
Anthropologists are frequently teachers and/or researchers in colleges and universities or work for public and private agencies. They may focus on historic or cultural resource preservation or cross-cultural competencies in areas such as medicine, community development, education, tourism, business, or other specialties.

Scholarships
The department offers two endowed scholarships for undergraduate majors: the Robert L. Blakeley Endowed Scholarship in Anthropology and the Jeremy D. Gillen Endowed Memorial Scholarship in Anthropology.
