Applied Statistics, M.S.

The Master of Science degree program in Applied Statistics focuses on applications of statistics to the solution of functional problems in business, engineering, medicine, applied sciences, and other fields.

Admissions Requirements

In addition to the general requirements of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics has the following requirements:


  • A baccalaureate degree in mathematics, statistics or its equivalent
  • Courses in mathematics equivalent to:
    • MATH 4435/MATH 6435 Linear Algebra II
    • MATH 4751/MATH 6751 Mathematics Statistics I
    • MATH 4752/MATH 6752 Mathematics Statistics II
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Transcripts (one from each institution attended)
  • Official TOEFL/IELTS Scores (international applicants only)

Curriculum

Students who choose a thesis option will take 24 hours of graduate-level courses plus 6 hours of thesis research, with a thesis and a thesis defense. Those who choose a non-thesis (capstone) option will take 36 hours of graduate-level courses including 3 hours of graduate capstone course.


Awards and Assistantships

Various awards, assistantships and fellowships are available to new and current graduate students. More than 50% of our new M.S. students and more than 80% of our current graduate students receive Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTA).


Career Opportunities

Our applied statistics graduates are expected to find jobs as statisticians, biostatisticians, data scientists, and data analysts in healthcare, finance, industry, government, academia, and other fields. Statistics careers are lauded for abundant job opportunities with high income levels and impressive job satisfaction rates. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 35% growth in job opportunities for statisticians by the year 2029.

  • Classroom Experience: In small classrooms, students learn through lectures, discussion, small group activities, hands-on experiences, readings, individual assignments and group projects.
  • Affordable Education: More than 50 percent of our incoming M.S. students and more than 80 percent of second-year graduate students receive graduate teaching assistantships and get a full tuition waiver.
  • Learning Through Teaching: M.S. students who become graduate teaching assistants have opportunities to learn how to tutor undergraduate laboratory sessions and to teach undergraduate mathematics and statistics courses.
