Program Overview

Introduction to the Chemistry B.S./M.S. Program

The Georgia State Chemistry Department offers a combined bachelor of science and master of science degree in chemistry. This dual-degree opportunity allows students to save a year of time and tuition compared to pursuing the degrees separately.

Program Details

  • Program Director: Dr. Maged Henary
  • Location: Atlanta Campus
  • Duration: Full-time students can complete the program in five years.
  • Application Deadlines: Students can enter the program in fall, spring, or summer.
  • Admissions Requirements: Incoming bachelor's students will apply through Undergraduate Admissions. After acceptance to Georgia State, students interested in a dual-degree program should discuss the requirements for eligibility with the dual-degree program coordinator at the start of their sophomore year.

Dual-Degree Program Eligibility

  • The Dual B.S./M.S. Program in Chemistry is available to undergraduate chemistry majors who maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
  • Students may apply at any time once they have taken between 30-80 credit hours.
  • Acceptance into the dual-degree program does not constitute admission to the graduate degree program. Admission to the graduate program occurs in the senior year of undergraduate study and is contingent upon successful completion of the bachelor's degree, performance in the graduate-level courses taken during the bachelor's degree, and meeting the other admission requirements of the specific program.

Benefits of the Dual-Degree Program

  • Waiving of the GRE requirement
  • Graduate admission application fee waiver when applying to the graduate program
  • Up to 12 credit hours can count toward completion of both the B.S. and M.S. degrees in chemistry (double credits)
  • Students completing graduate coursework while an undergraduate will pay the undergraduate tuition rate
  • Dual-degree students accepted into the M.S. program may receive Graduate Assistantships which come with tuition waivers for graduate program enrollment

How to Register for Graduate Courses

  1. Meet with your academic advisor to discuss your graduation plans and to review your remaining degree requirements.
  2. Meet with your dual degree faculty coordinator or his/her designee to discuss your progression in the dual degree program and graduate course enrollment options.
  3. If you plan to take a graduate course in the next upcoming term, fill out the Graduate Course Approval Form.
  4. Register for the graduate course once you receive an email confirming your authorization.

Description and Careers

The program prepares graduates to pursue careers in varying fields, including those in academics, research, government, and private organizations. Students who complete the B.S./M.S. program will become well-trained professionals who possess a high level of proficiency in modern chemical techniques and knowledge of modern chemical problems.
