Program Overview

The Dual Degree program in Biology and Medical Sciences in Biology (MBMS) at Georgia State University allows eligible students to earn both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years. This program is designed to prepare students for the medical school application process and the first year of medical school.


Program Details

  • The bachelor's degree program is a 120-credit-hour program.
  • The master's degree program is a 40-credit-hour program.
  • Students can begin taking graduate-level coursework in their junior or senior year, which can be applied toward both the bachelor's and master's degree programs.
  • Undergraduate students in dual undergraduate/graduate programs pay tuition at the undergraduate rate, regardless of the course level.
  • Graduate students in dual undergraduate/graduate programs pay tuition at the graduate or professional rate, regardless of the course level.

Admissions Requirements

  • Students must be a Biology major with at least 12 credit hours remaining in their degree and an overall GPA of 3.3 or more.
  • Students must complete Biol 3240 and 3250 with a grade no lower than a B and be interviewed by Dr. Eilertson, a coordinator for the Medical Science concentration.
  • Students must submit the online Dual Degree Program Application and receive notification from the college that Dr. Eilertson has approved the application.

This Dual Degree program prepares students for the medical school application process as well as the first year of medical school. Students go on to careers as:

Benefits

Graduates of the Medical Sciences concentration in Biology automatically become more competitive candidates when applying to medical school. They also complete the program better prepared for first-year med-school courses. The program has a 90 percent acceptance rate for the first three cohorts.
