College of the Arts
The College of the Arts at Georgia State University is a destination for students seeking a serious arts education in a vibrant downtown setting. The college offers a range of programs, including the Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Art Education.
Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Art Education
The M.A.T. in Art Education is a 43-hour program that prepares students for teaching certification at the graduate level. The program is designed for artists who have worked in the community, experienced art teachers, or recent art graduates.
Admissions Requirements
Applicants for the M.A.T. degree must submit the following items:
- Three letters of recommendation
- Statement of Intent: A one-to-two-page statement of purpose describing academic interests, proposed area of specialization, and long-range career goals
- Portfolio: A successful portfolio demonstrates creativity and commitment in a cohesive body of work
- Examples of work by the applicant's students should represent a variety of media and reflect quality in design, craftsmanship, originality, complexity, and historical or cultural content
Specific Admission Requirements
- An undergraduate major appropriate to the intended major at Georgia State, preferably in the field of art
- Students should have completed at least 15 hours in studio art at the undergraduate level with introductory classes in the following areas: Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, Printmaking, Photography, and Sculpture
- A high standard of overall undergraduate achievement, earned a 2.5 overall cumulative grade-point average, and a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher in art content courses
- Passing scores on GACE Program Admission Assessment
- Ethics (Program Entry test)
Course of Study
The M.A.T. program requires 43 hours of graduate coursework, including:
- Select one (3): Three hours of art history coursework (non-Western preferred)
- Studio Art Requirement: 9 hours of coursework in a studio concentration
- Art Education Requirement: 9 hours of 8000 level art education coursework
- Art Education Methods Certification Coursework
