Program Overview
The K-5 Mathematics Endorsement program at Georgia State University is designed to prepare teachers to hold the Georgia Professional Standards Commission endorsement and may qualify them for salary incentives in their district. The program develops pedagogical content knowledge, mindset, and instructional capabilities as an effective and equitable elementary mathematics teacher.
Program Details
- The program consists of five courses, with four focused on concentrated study of elementary mathematics and one serving as a field placement.
- The program can be completed as a standalone program or embedded in a graduate degree such as an M.Ed., Ed.D., or Ph.D.
- All required classes can be completed online.
- The program is intended for teachers who hold a clear, renewable certificate, level 4 or higher in one of the following areas: early childhood education, middle grades — mathematics, or special education general curriculum/early childhood education.

Program Highlights
- The Preparing, Supporting and Retaining Elementary Mathematics Specialists (PSREMS) project, a five-year project involving partnerships among Georgia State, Gwinnett County Public Schools, and the non-profit Corners Outreach, funded by the National Science Foundation.
- The project increases the number of Elementary Mathematics Specialists (EMSs) in high-need urban schools.
- EMSs have the potential to systemically improve mathematics education by positively influencing teachers' instruction at their school sites and across the district and by enhancing student achievement.
