Program Overview

Introduction to the Music, Dual B.Mu./M.Mu. Program

The School of Music at Georgia State University offers a dual Bachelor of Music and Master of Music program for all Performance concentrations, Jazz Studies, Composition, and Piano Pedagogy. This dual-degree opportunity enables qualified students to enroll in graduate courses late in their undergraduate program and apply the coursework toward both the bachelor's and master's programs.

Program Details

  • The program is designed to take five years to complete.
  • Students must be formally accepted into the dual-degree program by the school and the College of the Arts to be able to take graduate courses as an undergraduate.
  • Acceptance into the dual program does not constitute admission to the master's program. Students must fulfill regular graduate admissions requirements and apply for the master's program following college processes.
  • Through the dual-degree programs, highly talented and qualified students will have the opportunity to complete both a bachelor's and master's degree in as little as five years.

Admission Requirements

  • Bachelor's students who have earned 30 hours of academic credit at Georgia State (excluding AP or transfer credits) and have no more than 90 hours with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 at Georgia State are eligible to apply for the dual-degree program.
  • Students apply for admission using the university dual-degree application form by posted college deadlines. Applications are submitted to the college's Office of Academic Assistance.
  • A separate application to the School of Music is also required. Students must submit any required pre-screening audition materials and must complete in-person auditions to be accepted.

Program Highlights

  • The school provides graduates with real practical experience and access to employment with a broad range of prestigious arts institutions and organizations, music festivals, and Atlanta music establishments.
  • Notable alumni include Coy Bowles, Carlos Simon, Henry Cheng, and Darren English, among others.
  • As an international city, Atlanta attracts world-renowned classical and jazz artists, guest conductors, guest soloists, and composers in-residence who come to the campus and collaborate with School of Music faculty and students.

Curriculum and Tuition

  • The senior year and fifth year will be comprised of 36 hours of graduate coursework (Courses Related to the Major).
  • There is an applied music fee of $350 per semester for a one-hour (8000 level) lesson and $200 per semester for a half-hour (6000 level) lesson. Additional lab fees for certain courses may apply.

Goals and Outcomes

  • Ensuring comprehensive exposure to an array of perspectives as represented by the various faculty approaches to music performance, music history, music theory, and teaching styles.
  • Honoring the continuing traditions of music making and pedagogy while exploring new forms and contemporary issues within the various musical fields.
  • Developing pedagogical skills and strategies through teaching assistantships for undergraduate-level courses.
  • Preparing students for a professional career in music through rigorous performance preparation, exposure to important repertoire, and attention to practical business aspects of various musical careers.
