Program Overview


Introduction to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Georgia State University is designed for students who do not hold licensure as registered nurses. The program is built on a strong foundation of liberal arts education, including mathematics, sciences, language arts, social sciences, as well as theoretical and clinical nursing practice.


Program Details

  • The BSN program is 123 credit hours, designed to be completed in eight academic semesters.
  • The first four semesters are comprised of University System of Georgia Core curriculum and prerequisites for nursing majors.
  • The final four semesters are centered on the nursing major curriculum and relevant electives.
  • Students learn the essentials of nursing care in the classroom, nursing lab, simulation centers, clinical facilities, and community-based agencies.

Accreditation and Approvals

  • The College of Nursing is fully approved by the Georgia Board of Nursing and the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), a national accreditation agency for schools of nursing.

Admissions Requirements

General Requirements

  • Students must apply and be accepted to the university as exploratory nursing students first.
  • Once accepted, students must complete the nursing professional program application.
  • A resume that includes volunteer work is required (no volunteer verification form is required).
  • A letter of recommendation is required (submitted before the application deadline).

Letter of Recommendation Guidelines

  • The letter must be on an official letterhead providing the complete address of the company or affiliated organization.
  • The letter can be either professional or academic (preferably college level); an academic recommendation is preferred.
  • Letters must include full name, title/position, telephone number, and organization affiliated.
  • Each letter should be signed with an authentic recommender's handwritten signature or electronic digital signature, dated, and in the appropriate letter format.

Prerequisite Courses

  • Communicating in Writing: ENGL 1101, 1102; MATH 1001 or 1111
  • Institutional Priority: Phil 1010, Scom 1000, Pers 2001, 2002, or 2003 (2 courses)
  • Humanities and Fine Arts: Humanities (1 course) and Fine Arts (1 course)
  • Science Sequence Requirement: COMPLETED Sci sequence: Chem 1151K/Chem 1152K preferred
  • Science and Mathematics: MATH 1401
  • Social Science: Hist 2110, Pols 1101, World History and Social Science
  • Field of Study: Biol 2251K, Biol 2252K (Course cannot be older than five years old), Biol 2260 & 2260L & Nurs 2010 and Nurs 2200 (Must be an Exploratory Nursing major and have an overall GPA of 3.0)

Application Deadlines

Scholarships

  • The School of Nursing offers a variety of merit and need-based scholarships to enrolled students.
  • Students can search for scholarships offered through Georgia State and external scholarship websites by accessing the Scholarship Resource Center.
  • The Lettie Pate Whitehead Scholarship is available to a number of undergraduate and graduate female students in any Lewis College major.

Careers

Nursing is a critical component of patient care, with nurses being patients' primary caregivers and representing independent and collaborative care of individuals, families, and communities. Nurses can work in a variety of settings, such as hospitals, clinics, agencies, and schools. Upon graduation, nursing students are eligible to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX), a requirement by the Georgia Board of Nursing to become a registered professional nurse.
