Program Overview


Diploma of Postgraduate Hydrogeology Applied to Mining and Environment

The Diploma of Postgraduate Hydrogeology Applied to Mining and Environment is a program designed to provide professionals in the field of geology and engineering with the capacity to solve and propose strategies for addressing problems related to the exploration, exploitation, and sustainable management of groundwater resources.


Objective

The objective of the program is to provide professionals with the knowledge and skills necessary to work with groundwater resources in a productive and environmentally responsible manner.


Target Audience

The program is directed towards engineers and geologists who work in the productive sector of industry, public organizations, and institutions of higher education, as well as professionals in the field of water resources.

The program is organized by the Department of Geology of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile.

Duration and Schedule

The program lasts from May 4 to November 6, 2026, with classes held one week per month, from Monday to Friday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.


Modules

The program consists of seven modules:


  1. Introduction to Hydrogeology: Provides an integral vision of the relevance of geology and geomorphology in hydrogeological work.
  2. Water Resources and Hydrology: Provides knowledge and practical tools for estimating variables in the hydrological cycle involved in the water balance of a basin.
  3. Hydraulics of Wells: Provides theoretical knowledge and practical tools for designing pumping and monitoring wells.
  4. Hydrochemistry and Isotopy of Waters: Provides knowledge and practical tools for characterizing the geochemistry of surface and groundwater.
  5. Exploration and Evaluation of Aquifers: Provides knowledge and practical tools for exploring and evaluating aquifers.
  6. Hydrogeological Modeling: Provides theoretical and practical tools for identifying the steps necessary to address a problem of numerical modeling of groundwater.
  7. Contamination of Groundwater Resources: Provides knowledge and practical tools for predicting, preventing, and controlling different types of contamination that can affect groundwater.

Evaluation

Each module is approved with a grade of 4.0. Upon approval of all modules, students will receive a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrogeology Applied to Mining and Environment, issued by the School of Postgraduate Studies of the Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile.

  • Each application will be evaluated and resolved by the Academic Committee of the Diploma.
