Program Overview

The Magíster en Ciencias de la Ingeniería, mención Transporte (Master's in Engineering Sciences, mention in Transport) is a postgraduate program offered by the Facultad de Ciencias Físicas y Matemáticas (Faculty of Physical and Mathematical Sciences) at the Universidad de Chile.

Description

The program focuses on the complex and diverse problems of transportation in modern society, requiring a multidisciplinary approach that integrates psychology, engineering, geography, economics, and urbanism. The goal is to train graduates who can tackle methodological problems of high complexity and propose scientific-technological solutions to current challenges in the field.

Objective

The objective of the program is to form graduates of excellence, capable of addressing complex methodological problems and proposing solutions that allow them to face the current challenges of the discipline.

Profile of Graduates

Graduates of the program will be specialists capable of:

• Demonstrating a solid knowledge and capacity to apply the fundamental methodological tools of Transport Engineering.
• Contributing to theoretical and/or applied research in the discipline, understanding its scope for social and economic development in the country, in line with the institutional mission and values of the Universidad de Chile.
• Integrating into public or private organizations, working in research centers or projects, or continuing doctoral studies in the area.

Plan of Studies

The program is organized over 4 academic semesters, including the realization of a thesis, and consists of obligatory and elective curricular activities. The total academic load is 120 credits, with full-time dedication. This includes 24 credits of obligatory courses, 36 credits of elective courses, and 60 credits for thesis work (30 credits each for Trabajo de Tesis I and II).

• CI5146: Redes de Transporte (Transport Networks)
• CI4146: Economía de Transporte (Transport Economics)
• CI5144: Demanda de Transporte (Transport Demand)

Elective Courses

These are defined jointly by the student and their tutor and must be approved by the Program's Academic Committee. The list of elective courses is extensive and includes courses taught by the departments of Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Industrial Engineering, and Mathematics.

Thesis

The thesis work is divided into two courses: Trabajo de Tesis I and Trabajo de Tesis II, each worth 30 credits.

Admission Requirements

To apply, candidates must have a Licenciado or professional title whose level, content, and duration of studies correspond to a formation equivalent to that of the Licenciado en Ciencias de la Ingeniería at the Universidad de Chile.

Selection Criteria

The selection criteria consider:

1. Academic performance in previous university studies.
2. Analytical capacity to examine and resolve complex problems.
3. Capacity to incorporate into an intensive study regime.

These criteria are evaluated based on:

1. Certificates of previous university studies with grades and scales of notes.
2. Personal background in activities related to professional performance and experience.
3. Two letters of recommendation.
4. A letter of intention from the applicant.
5. An interview with a member of the Academic Committee or someone designated by them.

Accreditation

The program is accredited according to Article 58 of Law 21.526.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee for the year 2025 is $185,300.- Chilean pesos for the matrícula (enrollment), and the arancel (tuition) is 75 UF (Unidad de Fomento, a Chilean monetary unit) per active semester in the program.

Duration and Permanence

The minimum permanence as a regular student is one year, and the maximum permanence can extend up to three years, including thesis courses. Students eliminated for exceeding the maximum permanence may be readmitted under exceptional conditions and according to the rules established by the Academic Committee and the Director of the Postgraduate School.
