Introduction to the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine

The Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine at Clemson University is committed to enhancing the Clemson community and contributing to animal and human health in South Carolina and beyond. The college strives to recruit, recognize, and select prepared candidates to thrive in the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program.

Admissions

Admission to the Harvey S. Peeler Jr. College of Veterinary Medicine is competitive, based on academic and non-academic attributes. The admissions team considers all factors and qualities contributing to a successful veterinary career.

Academic Requirements for Admission

• GPA Requirements:
  • In-State: 3.0
  • Out-of-State: 3.4
• Alternate Eligibility Policy (SC Residents only): The college recognizes that some qualified applicants may not meet the minimum academic standards. A subcommittee of the Admissions Committee will review all SC residents who do not meet the minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA for further consideration.
• Prerequisites:
  • General Biology I and II with Laboratory
  • General Chemistry I and II
  • Organic Chemistry I and II with Laboratory
  • Biochemistry
  • General Physics I and II with Laboratory
  • Introduction to Human Communication or Public Speaking
  • Composition
  • Statistical Methods I
  • A grade of C- or higher is required for all courses.
  • Applicants are strongly encouraged to complete prerequisite courses within five years of submitting their application.

Nonacademic Requirements for Admission

• Experience Hours: Candidates are required to have a minimum of 100 hours of clinical, agribusiness/farm, health science, or research experience supervised by a DVM or PhD, 100 hours of animal experience, and an additional 100 hours of community service.
• Geographic Diversity: The college focuses on recruiting talented students from underserved rural areas of SC where there is a shortage of veterinary professionals.
• Professional Diversity: The college focuses on recruiting individuals who wish to serve the animal agricultural industry and farms in SC.
• Recommendation Letters: Three recommendations are required, including one from an individual holding a DVM or PhD.

Additional Admissions Criteria

The college evaluates applicants holistically, considering all aspects of an applicant's background, including unique employment and life experiences, as well as personal hardship perseverance. Applicants who meet minimum requirements will also be required to submit recorded interview questions for review by the Admissions Committee.

Requirements for Licensure

Upon graduating from the Clemson DVM program, graduates will follow these steps to be licensed to practice:

• Complete the AVMA COE-accredited DVM program.
• Achieve a passing score on the North American Veterinary License Examination (NAVLE).
• Achieve a passing score on the state veterinary practice exam.
• Complete and submit an application for a veterinary medical license with the South Carolina Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.
• Pay the application fee.
