Social Work (Direct Entry College/University Transfer)
Honours Degree Overview
The Social Work program is designed to prepare students to be critical practitioners who seek social transformation. The College/University Transfer stream accepts applicants with a community college diploma in Social Service Work, Community Work, Child and Youth Work, other diplomas, and/or university credits.
Program Structure
Most College Transfer students holding a Social Service Worker diploma will enter the BSW program at the second-year level. The program is structured as follows:
- Year 2:
- SOWK 2050 Identity, Diversity and Anti-Discriminatory Practice
- SOWK 2060 Social Justice Work with Groups, Communities and Social Movements
- SOWK 2070 Indigenous Understandings in Social Work Theory and Practice

- Year 3:
- SOWK 3041 Communication
- SOWK 3060 Integrated Social Work Practice
- SOWK 3070 Foundations of Social Work Research
- SOWK 3110 Policy Frameworks

- SOWK 4000 Practicum in Social Work I
- SOWK 4001 Practicum in Social Work II
- SOWK 4020 Issues in the Study of the Welfare State: Power, Organization and Bureaucracy*
- Social Work Electives *SOWK 4020 is a practicum co-requisite. It can only be taken when you are on placement.
Program Details
The final year of the program includes 700 hours of placement in the community, providing students with hands-on experience in applying theory to practice. The School of Social Work aims to prepare students to be critical practitioners who seek social transformation.
