Program Overview
Global Health Program
The University of Central Florida (UCF) College of Medicine offers a Global Health program that provides students with the opportunity to participate in international medical service missions.
Program Description
In 2015, students from UCF College of Medicine, MedPACt (Medical Students Providing Across Continents), UCF College of Nursing, UF College of Pharmacy, and Engineers without Borders-USA traveled to six rural communities in the Dominican Republic for an international medical service mission. The team was accompanied by faculty members, including Dr. Simms-Cendan, Dr. David Simmons, Chaplain Linda Simmons, Dr. José Avila, and Dr. Janet Bailey.
Program Goals
The program aims to address the medical and hygiene needs in impoverished regions of the Dominican Republic. To achieve this goal, the team implemented an electronic medical record system, established longitudinal care, and promoted interdisciplinary collaboration between UCF College of Medicine, UF College of Pharmacy, UCF College of Nursing, Engineers without Borders-USA, and Universidad Católica Nordestana.
Program Outcomes
During the 2015 trip, the team saw over 864 patients in six different towns and provided them with medical services. The students gained invaluable clinical skills, learned about the Dominican culture and way of life, and developed a sense of social responsibility to their community and the world.
Program Support
The program is supported by the International Medical Samaritans Program Scholarship, sponsored by the Diebel Legacy Fund at Central Florida Foundation. This merit-based scholarship supports students who demonstrate a dedication to volunteerism and academic excellence.
Program Needs
The program requires medical supplies, including:
- Urinalysis dipsticks and glucometer test strips
- HbA1c Monitors
- Over-the-counter pain medications
- Topical anti-fungal and steroid creams
- Vitamins (pre-natal and children's)
- Prescription medications
These supplies are essential to providing medical care to the patients in the Dominican Republic. The program relies on community support to meet its goals and provide necessary medical care to those in need.
