Program Overview

Introduction to the Future Academic Scientists in Dermatology (FASID) T32 Program

The Department of Dermatology offers a unique training program, the Future Academic Scientists in Dermatology (FASID) T32 Program, funded by the National Institutes of Health. This program provides a focus on translational research, training MD, MD-PhD, and PhD trainees in clinical and basic science research projects.


Program Goals

The primary objectives of the FASID T32 Program are:


  1. To provide training and mentorship for MD and MD-PhD Dermatology residents and PhD post-doctoral fellows in translational research, enabling them to develop successful independent basic or clinical research programs and become future leaders in investigative dermatology.
  2. To equip FASID T32 trainees with a skillset of innovative methods, state-of-the-art technologies, and interdisciplinary approaches to translate new targets for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention to patients suffering from skin diseases.

Tracks for Trainees

The program offers three tracks for trainees:


  • Track 1: A 2-year clinical and translational research track for Dermatology residents.
  • Track 2: A 2-year basic-science translational research track for Dermatology residents.
  • Track 3: A 2-year basic-science translational research track for PhD post-doctoral trainees.

Structured Education Curriculum

All tracks include a structured education requirement, comprising training in:


  • Clinical research
  • Methods for enhancing reproducibility in research
  • Responsible conduct in research Additional training in statistics, animal models, and other methods will be available as determined on an individual basis.

Enrichment Program

All T32 trainees will participate in an enrichment program consisting of:

  • Dermatology translational research journal club
  • Annual Dermatology Research Day

Research Opportunities
