Program Overview
The Medical Student Externship at The Johns Hopkins All Children's Pediatric Surgical Service provides students with hands-on experience in the preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care of surgical and potentially surgical diseases in neonates, infants, children, and adolescents.
Program Description
Under the supervision of the fellow and/or attending surgeon, the student physician will participate in all aspects of patient care, including:
- Initial evaluation
- Performance of detailed history and physical examinations
- Initiation and evaluation of diagnostic laboratory and radiologic testing
- Formulation of plans of resuscitation and patient care
The student physician will also assist in the surgical care of patients in the operating room and be familiar with the general techniques of surgical procedures. Additional responsibilities include:
- Assisting in the postoperative care plan
- Performing daily rounds
- Providing ward care as needed
- Assisting in discharge planning
- Participating in outpatient clinics
- Exposure to pediatric and neonatal intensive care units
- Emergency evaluation of pediatric trauma patients
Program Requirements
To be eligible for the program, students must:
- Be in their fourth year of medical school
- Be in good standing at an accredited U.S. medical school
Program Details
- Length: Four-week rotation
- Availability: One student per rotation, available year-round
- Housing: Limited student housing available on a first-come, first-served basis
- Academic Requirements: Students are required to attend all teaching conferences as scheduled.
