Augmentative and Alternative Communication Preschool Class
The Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) preschool language class is designed for children with expressive language delays. This weekly class, held at Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida, aims to help preschool-age children learn to effectively use AAC devices within a social setting.
Class Details
- The class is 90 minutes long and is held once a week.
- Each class has up to seven children and is run by two certified pediatric speech-language pathologists.
- The class features a theme with associated activities designed to target language use and social development.
- Parents and caregivers are also coached on how to help their child practice and grow their skills at home.
Candidate Criteria
- Children ages 2-5 who have had a speech-language evaluation and currently use a speech generating device to augment expressive language.
- Children with no more than mild behavioral difficulties.

- The child must first be evaluated by a speech-language pathologist to determine if the AAC preschool language class is appropriate based on their current skill level with their speech generating device.
