Program Overview

Educational Program

The educational program at Johns Hopkins draws on the depth of resources available to provide personalized learning to meet the fellow's needs. The program provides clinical and research expertise through a combination of didactics, interactive learning experiences, and individual mentorship.

Program Structure

  • First-year fellow orientation: Orientation lectures are provided by pediatric and adult pulmonary faculty during the first two months of fellowship, introducing fellows to key topics in pulmonary medicine and science.
  • Clinical mentorship: Each fellow chooses a clinical mentor in the pulmonary division, who meets with the fellow at least twice yearly to provide advice on research and clinical activities, career development, and networking.
  • Simulation Center: Fellows have access to a state-of-the-art simulation center for practicing pulmonary procedures, including virtual bronchoscopy, to gain comfort with airway anatomy and bronchoscopic techniques.
  • Weekly division conference: A fellow-led educational conference is held weekly, where fellows, faculty, and outside speakers present clinical topics and research findings.
  • Weekly meetings with primary research mentor: Fellows meet with their primary research mentor at least weekly to discuss progress.
  • Weekly board review for clinical fellows: An interactive session led by a faculty member, covering topics such as pediatric pulmonology board question review, respiratory physiology, clinical and research ethics, and research methodology.
  • Monthly radiology rounds for clinical fellows: Fellows present interesting cases to fellows and faculty, with an attending radiologist reviewing the pertinent imaging findings.
  • Department of pediatrics meetings: Fellows are encouraged to attend conferences given by the pediatrics department, including Grand Rounds and seminars.
  • Annual national scientific meeting: All fellows attend one national scientific meeting per year, with the division covering expenses.
  • Public health training: Fellows take biostatistics and epidemiology courses, with opportunities for additional training, including the Master of Health Science degree.
  • Personalized training: Fellows can personalize their education with support from the division, including teaching fellowships, ethics fellowships, and elective coursework.
  • Career guidance: Formal group sessions and individual meetings on career development are provided by the program director and division chair.
  • Teaching opportunities: Fellows have opportunities to teach medical students and pediatric residents in formal and informal settings.
  • Quality improvement: Each clinical fellow participates in a quality improvement project, receiving training in QI and participating in the annual division QI project.
  • Grants and research support: Fellows are encouraged to submit grant applications and have access to resources, including online and in-person access to the Johns Hopkins library system and biostatistics and epidemiology support.
