- A bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, physical sciences, computer science, mathematics, computer or electrical engineering, or a related field
- GPA requirements:
- Bachelor's degree: 3.0/4.0 or higher in either the overall undergraduate degree or the last 60 credit hours
- Master's degree: 3.3/4.0 or higher in the master's program
Funding
Ph.D. applicants may be considered for teaching assistantships, research assistantships, and fellowships depending on qualifications and performance within the program.

STEM Designation
The Doctor of Philosophy in Electrical and Computer Engineering is a STEM-designated program, allowing international students to work within the U.S. for up to 36 months after program completion.
Requirements for Awarding of Degree
Students must maintain high-level performance and demonstrate graduate knowledge acquisition in several incremental stages to be awarded a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Identification of Research Area
Within 12 months of acceptance into the Ph.D. program, students must identify an area of research interest by contacting and being accepted by a professor willing to guide dissertation research.
Ph.D. Course Breadth Requirements
Students must complete at least 6 credits in two different breadth areas with a grade of B or better in each course. The appropriate areas of study and specific courses are determined by the dissertation advisor.
Qualifying Exam
To be eligible for the qualifying examination, students must have satisfied the Ph.D. course breadth requirements. The qualifying examination can be taken no later than the semester in which all required coursework for the degree is completed.
Dissertation Proposal and Defense
Admission to Candidacy
Candidacy status indicates that a doctoral student is ready for the completion of the dissertation. A student is admitted to candidacy upon successfully completing all required coursework and passing the qualifying examination.
Deadline for Proposal Defense
Proposal defense must be taken within one semester after the satisfactory completion of the qualifying examination.
Oral Defense and Submission of Dissertation
A dissertation is required of all candidates for the doctoral degree. A proposal must be submitted to the student's Dissertation Committee for approval. Upon completion of the dissertation, the degree candidate will submit to the Dean of the Graduate School an application for dissertation defense signed by the student's Dissertation Committee.

Student Stories
From Turkey studying in Florida It is one of the largest university campuses I have ever been to as I struggled to find the places that I needed to be multiple times. Food choices are great, library is phenomenal, and water fountains are very pleasing to sit by. SASC Building has very interesting architecture.
Studying in Florida I went here for my undergrad back several years ago and came back for my graduates. This university is a blast of culture and learning. Most of the professors are amazing, there's clubs for everything, classes that range from odd to amazing and everything in between. They keep adding to MMC making new buildings, bringing in new vendors, and creating new art.
It's an awesome campus. Everyone is nice and helpful. It's not loud. The students are very chill. There are students of all ages and backgrounds, from the 20s to 30s to the 40s to the 50s...you get the jist. Anyway, there are many international students as well. I like that everything is there for the students. All kinds of activities, restaurants and more importantly help. There is help for anything and everything they need. They have free private counseling for anyone that needs it. They make sure that each student takes a mandatory training session on identifying someone in need or danger. They are big on safety for sure. It's a good place. It's expensive but think about all they offer. My fave part, the have some of the best professors. I'm in Creative Writing and many of my professors are Published Authors!
