Construction Trades Certificate Program
Program Overview
Introduction to the FIU Construction Trades Program
The FIU Construction Trades Program was established in 2018 through a partnership between The Moss School of Construction Management in FIU's College of Engineering & Computing and the Lennar Foundation. This program aims to provide a Construction Trades Certificate, addressing the demand for skilled construction workers in South Florida.
Program Overview
The Construction Trades Certificate Program began offering Pre-Apprenticeship certification in seven different trades in 2020. By 2022, the program had expanded to include a Solar Energy Technician Apprenticeship, which is the first of its kind in the nation to provide graduates with national credentialing in solar power construction and installation.
Community Workforce Development
The program is designed as a community workforce development initiative, focusing on training workers to fill the demand for construction jobs in South Florida. It serves South Florida communities by providing job opportunities, recognizing that construction is among the top five industries for good jobs that do not require a bachelor's degree.
Job Prospects and Industry Growth
Construction work in Florida is notable for offering well-paying jobs, with more than 141,000 construction jobs available and average salaries of $52,000. The industry is expected to grow 12 percent by 2026. Employment of construction laborers and helpers is projected to grow 12 percent from 2016 to 2026, faster than the average for all occupations.
Eligibility and Benefits
To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 18 years old. A college degree is not required. Upon graduation, participants will have acquired the skills necessary to secure entry-level construction jobs in Miami and beyond.
