Program Overview


Introduction to the Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Internal Medicine Residency Program at Florida International University, in partnership with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center (Miami), offers a comprehensive and academically rigorous curriculum designed to prepare clinically skilled physicians. The program is rooted in the ACGME Core Competencies and provides opportunities for residents to participate in research, quality improvement, advocacy, and healthcare administration.

Developing the Doctors of Tomorrow

The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine partnered with the Miami VA Healthcare System to create a visionary internal medicine residency program with a focus on ambulatory care. The program includes inpatient care with outstanding academic faculty, state-of-the-art outpatient clinics, and additional experience obtained with Jackson Memorial Hospital.

Miami VA Medical Center

The Miami VA Healthcare System is an accredited comprehensive medical provider and has been designated as a Center of Excellence in Spinal Cord Injury Research, Substance Abuse Treatment, and a recognized Chest Pain Center.


Jackson Memorial Hospital

Jackson Memorial Hospital is the centerpiece of the Jackson Health System, owned and operated by Miami-Dade County through the Public Health Trust. With more than 1,550 licensed beds, Jackson Memorial is both a referral center and a magnet for medical research.


Curriculum

The program curriculum incorporates several longitudinal rotations, immersing trainees in particular areas of study throughout the entire duration of the training program.


  • PGY1 Rotations:
    • VA Ambulatory Care Clinics: 18 weeks
    • VA Geriatrics: 2 weeks
    • VA Inpatient Wards: 8 weeks
    • VA ICU: 4 weeks
    • VA Neurology: 2 weeks
    • JMH Emergency Medicine: 2 weeks
    • JMH Inpatient Wards: 10 weeks
    • Vacation: 4 weeks
    • Elective: 2 weeks
  • PGY2 Rotations:
    • VA Ambulatory Care Clinics: 18 weeks
    • VA Cardiology: 4 weeks
    • VA Pulmonology: 2 weeks
    • VA Inpatient Wards: 4 weeks
    • VA Electives: 12 weeks
    • JMH Inpatient Wards: 6 weeks
    • JMH Wards Night Float: 2 weeks
    • Vacation: 4 weeks
  • PGY3 Rotations:
    • VA Ambulatory Care Clinics: 16 weeks
    • VA Inpatient Wards: 4 weeks
    • VA ICU: 4 weeks
    • VA Psychiatry: 2 weeks
    • VA Electives: 10 weeks
    • JMH Emergency Medicine: 2 weeks
    • JMH Inpatient Wards: 6 weeks
    • JMH Wards Night Float: 2 weeks
    • Vacation: 4 weeks
    • Hospice & Palliative Care: 2 weeks

Program Application Requirements

Acceptance/admission to the program is contingent on the submission of all requested materials and meeting all eligibility requirements determined by the program.


  • Residency Prerequisites:
    • Passing score on USMLE or COMLEX 1 and 2 before an interview will be offered
    • Must be eligible to register as a resident physician with the state of Florida
  • Application Requirements:
    • Completed ERAS application
    • Medical school transcripts
    • Personal statement
    • Two letters of recommendation from physicians familiar with an applicant's character and abilities. When possible, one of the letters should be a Standardized Evaluation Letter (SEL) provided by the applicant's medical school.
    • Letter from medical school dean or Medical Student Performance Evaluation
  • Application Timeline:
    • Applications accepted: September through November
