Introduction to the Haitian Summer Institute

The Haitian Summer Institute is a six-week program designed for individuals interested in acquiring basic conversational proficiency in Haitian Creole, as well as those who wish to continue their Haitian Creole language training at the intermediate and advanced levels.

Program Structure

The program begins with intensive Haitian Creole language training divided into two tracks. Students have two enrollment options:

• Accelerated Beginning Haitian Creole for the first half of the program and Accelerated Intermediate Haitian Creole for the final half
• Accelerated Intermediate Haitian Creole for the first half of the program and Accelerated Advanced Haitian Creole for the final half

Courses and Curriculum

In addition to the Institute's intensive language courses, participants are introduced to Haitian history and culture through lectures in English and Haitian Creole presented by nationally-recognized Haitianists and Diasporic leaders. Classes are held Monday through Friday and include a morning and afternoon session. The courses offered include:

• HAI 3213 Accelerated Beginning Haitian Creole
• HAI 3214 Accelerated Intermediate Haitian Creole
• HAI 3500 Haiti: Culture and Language (Advanced Haitian Creole)
• FOL 3930 Haitian Creole Language & Culture

Program Dates and Options

The program is offered in two options:

• Option 1: 4-week program from June 22 to July 17 (6 credits)
• Option 2: 6-week program from June 22 to July 31 (9 credits)

• 4-week program tuition & fees (6 credits): $1,435.99 (subject to change)
• 6-week program tuition & fees (9 credits): $2,052.70 (subject to change)
• Non-Degree Seeking Application Fee (Non-FIU Students Only): $30.00

Housing Options

FIU housing is available as an option for participants:

• Private bedroom in a 4-bedroom apartment for 6 weeks: $1,796.00 (subject to change)
• Private bedroom in a 4-bedroom apartment for 4 weeks: $1,197.28 (subject to change)
• Daily rate: $42.76 per night (subject to change)
