Introduction to the MSN Nurse Practitioner Program

The MSN Nurse Practitioner program is designed to prepare nurse practitioners for critical roles in healthcare systems. With access to healthcare becoming a reality for millions, nurse practitioners are at the forefront of delivering primary care services, performing procedures, and enjoying more autonomy and a broader scope of practice.


Program Overview

The program offers four distinct specialty tracks to obtain an MSN degree, with the option to add a Nurse Educator Certificate. The specialty tracks include:


  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Graduates are prepared to care for adolescents, adults, and the elderly, emphasizing disease prevention, health promotion, and management of patients with acute and chronic multi-system health problems.
  • MSN Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP): The MSN AGACNP assumes a critical role in healthcare systems, delivering care for patients with complex health needs in diverse settings.
  • Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner: Graduates are prepared as pediatric primary care specialists to diagnose, treat, and deliver care for newborns, children, and young adults.
  • Dual MSN Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner + Nurse Educator Certificate: Graduates are prepared to care for adolescents, adults, and the elderly, with an emphasis on disease prevention, health promotion, and management of patients with acute and chronic multi-system health problems, and are also prepared to function in educational settings.
  • Dual MSN Pediatric Primary Care Nurse Practitioner + Nurse Educator Certificate: Graduates are prepared as pediatric primary care specialists and are also prepared to function in educational settings.
  • Family Nurse Practitioner: Graduates are prepared to provide primary healthcare services to families and individuals of all ages.
  • Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner: This clinical specialty program focuses on advanced nursing practice for individuals, families, and communities with psychiatric and/or mental health programs.
  • Dual MSN Family Nurse Practitioner + Nurse Educator Certificate: Graduates are prepared to provide primary healthcare services to families and individuals of all ages and are also prepared to function in educational settings.
  • Dual MSN Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner + Nurse Educator Certificate: Graduates are prepared for advanced nursing practice in psychiatric and/or mental health programs and are also prepared to function in educational settings.

Program Details

  • The program consists of 6 semesters for MSN NP programs.
  • Credits required:
    • 45 credits for Adult-Gero and Pedi NP and Psych MSN programs.
    • 49 credits for Family MSN program.
    • 9 semesters for Dual MSN NP and Nurse Educator programs.
    • 61 credits for Dual Adult-Gero + Nurse Ed, Pedi + Nurse Ed, and Psych MSN + Nurse Ed programs.
    • 65 credits for Dual Family MSN + Nurse Ed program.

Licensing Eligibility

Program graduates are qualified to apply for national certification in their specialty areas and for state certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN).
