Program Overview

Introduction to the Civil Engineering Program

The Civil Engineering program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the field of civil engineering. The program is offered through the College of Engineering & Computing.

Degree

The degree offered is a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, students must meet the following requirements:

  • Complete an Associate in Arts (AA) degree
  • Complete all prerequisites with a grade of C or higher
  • Have a cumulative Transfer GPA of 2.0 or higher
  • Earn a grade of C or higher in all prerequisites in two attempts or fewer
    • Drop/withdrawal grades are considered attempts
  • Be Calculus I ready: Complete MAC 1140 and MAC 1114 or MAC 1147 with a grade of C or higher in each course

Special Notes

  • Students are strongly encouraged to complete math and science courses every term to make satisfactory progress toward completing all prerequisites and the AA degree prior to transfer.
  • Additional lower division courses are required for this program, and students are encouraged to take these courses prior to completing the AA degree.

Prerequisites

The following prerequisites are required for the program:

  1. MAC 2311 Calculus and Analytical Geometry 1
  2. MAC 2312 Calculus and Analytical Geometry 2
  3. MAC 2313 Calculus and Analytical Geometry 3
  4. MAP 2302 Introduction to Differential Equations
  5. CHM 1045 + CHM 1045L General Chemistry & Qualitative Analysis 1
  6. PHY 2048 + PHY 2048L Physics with Calculus 1 + Lab
  7. PHY 2049 Physics with Calculus 2 (Lab not required at FIU)

Additional Lower Division Courses

The following additional lower division courses are required:

  1. GLY 1010 + GLY 1010L Physical Geology + Lab
  • Students may substitute GLY 1010/L with another natural science course and lab except for physics and chemistry.
  1. ETD 1340 Computer Aided Drawing and Design (transfers as EGN 1110C)
  2. SUR 1101C Surveying 1 (transfers as SUR 2101C)
  3. EGN 2312 Engineering Mechanics-Statics (with Vectors) (transfers as EGN 3311)
