The program "Laughing at Injustice: The Art and Power of Satire" is designed to teach students how to produce art that lampoons seemingly intractable systemic societal issues.
Course Objectives
The course aims to provide an overview of the definition and history of satire, exploring how people in different settings and periods used satire for their own ends. This will be paired with an exploration of modern satire's many media, including:
- Literature
- Movies
- Music
- Theater
- TV
- Memes
- Anime
- TikTok
- Other modern media forms
Course Structure
The course will feature guest lectures by professional satirists, further expanding the theoretical and practical exploration of satire. By the end of the course, students should feel confident confronting powers that demand fear and complacency by arming them with ridicule and laughter.
Course Schedule
The course is scheduled to take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 2:00P to 3:15P.
