Admissions
The Master's in Psychology: Professional Counseling Psychology program at Florida International University has specific admission requirements and procedures.
Pre-Admissions Advising
The program offers two types of group pre-admissions advising sessions monthly:
- Virtual Information Sessions with program faculty and the Office of Graduate Admissions.
- Virtual Applicant Office Hours with program faculty. These sessions are held on the first Thursday of the month, and the schedule for the upcoming sessions is as follows:
- Thursday, 9/4/25 from 6-7pm (EST)
- Thursday, 10/2/25 from 6-7pm (EST)
- Thursday, 11/6/25 from 6-7pm (EST)
- Thursday, 12/4/25 from 6-7pm (EST)
- Thursday, 1/8/26 from 6-7pm (EST)
Deadlines
The program only offers Fall start dates, and applications for Fall 2026 are now being accepted. The application deadline is January 15, 2026. Applications will only be reviewed after the application deadline has passed, as the program does not offer rolling admissions. Only completed applications will be reviewed for admission.
Program Admissions Requirements
To be admitted into the Master's degree program in Counseling Psychology, a student must:
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Psychology or in a relevant discipline from an accredited college or university.
- If the Bachelor's degree is not in Psychology, the student must have completed four specific courses:
- An introductory course in Psychology
- A course in either Psychopathology or Personality Theories
- An upper-level Statistics/Data Analysis course
- Research Methods in Psychology
- Have a 3.0 GPA in the last 60 credits of upper-level work.
- Arrange to have three letters of recommendation evaluating the applicant's potential for graduate work.
- Submit a CV or Resume.
- Submit two writing samples, one of which must be academic.
- Submit a brief video statement discussing educational and career objectives and the specific relationship of the master's degree to achieving those objectives.
- International students whose native language is not English must submit acceptable scores verifying English language skills, with minimum TOEFL scores of 550 (paper) or 80 (internet) and minimum IELTS scores of 6.5.
Recommendation Letters
Applicants will need to use the application portal to request letters of recommendation from their letter writers. The application system will generate an email request with a link for the letter writer to upload their letters directly into the portal.
Video Statement
In a video up to 5 minutes long, applicants must discuss their educational and career objectives and the specific relationship of obtaining a degree in counseling psychology to achieving their goals. The video must be uploaded to a video sharing site, and a link must be sent with the subject line "Video Statement of Intent for PCP Program Admission."
Prerequisite Courses for Non-Psychology Majors
Prospective students whose Bachelor's degree is not in Psychology are required to complete the following courses before beginning the program:
- An introductory course in Psychology
- A course in either Psychopathology or Personality Theories
- An upper-level Statistics/Data Analysis course
- Research Methods in Psychology These courses can be taken at any accredited institution and must be approved by the program director for equivalency.

Student Stories
From Turkey studying in Florida It is one of the largest university campuses I have ever been to as I struggled to find the places that I needed to be multiple times. Food choices are great, library is phenomenal, and water fountains are very pleasing to sit by. SASC Building has very interesting architecture.
Studying in Florida I went here for my undergrad back several years ago and came back for my graduates. This university is a blast of culture and learning. Most of the professors are amazing, there's clubs for everything, classes that range from odd to amazing and everything in between. They keep adding to MMC making new buildings, bringing in new vendors, and creating new art.
It's an awesome campus. Everyone is nice and helpful. It's not loud. The students are very chill. There are students of all ages and backgrounds, from the 20s to 30s to the 40s to the 50s...you get the jist. Anyway, there are many international students as well. I like that everything is there for the students. All kinds of activities, restaurants and more importantly help. There is help for anything and everything they need. They have free private counseling for anyone that needs it. They make sure that each student takes a mandatory training session on identifying someone in need or danger. They are big on safety for sure. It's a good place. It's expensive but think about all they offer. My fave part, the have some of the best professors. I'm in Creative Writing and many of my professors are Published Authors!
