Program Overview

Cybersecurity and Assurance (CYBERSURE, Erasmus Mundus), Master of Science (Technology)

Program Description

The Master's program in Cybersecurity and Assurance (CYBERSURE, Erasmus Mundus) focuses on cybersecurity and assurance. Cybersecurity involves protecting computation, communication, and data from unauthorized access. Assurance encompasses systematic techniques for reasoning and evidence, as well as security strategies and operations.

The CYBERSURE program provides students with both practical technical skills and theoretical insights in:

  • Secure system engineering
  • Development of distributed applications
  • Cryptography
  • Assurance techniques

The program aims to educate highly professional engineers to meet both the immediate employment needs and the long-term needs of the European ICT industry.

Tuition Fees and Scholarships

The CYBERSURE program has a joint participation fee and a generous scholarship system funded by the European Commission (Erasmus Mundus).

For more information on the participation fee and available scholarships, please visit the program's website.

Program Structure

CYBERSURE is a double-degree program offered by a consortium of seven highly ranked universities in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Estonia, Austria, and France. The program leads to two Master of Science degrees (double degree) from the student's two universities.

The two-year program consists of 120 ECTS credits:

  • Compulsory and elective courses at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) (57.5 ECTS credits)
  • Summer school (2.5 ECTS credits)
  • Specializing studies at one of the other universities in the consortium (30 ECTS credits)
  • Master's thesis (30 ECTS credits)

Specialization Options

The first year of the Master's program is spent at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) in Norway.

During the two semesters of courses at NTNU, students will learn about the fundamental concepts, methods, and latest technology for secure system development, network security, cryptography, and security analysis and threat management, followed by a period for internship in a research and development environment or a research group at the university.

The second study year is spent at one of the other universities in the consortium, where students can specialize in one of the following:

  • Distributed Systems Security, Aalto University, Finland, 30 ECTS credits
  • Networks and Systems Security, KTH, Sweden, 30 ECTS credits
  • Security Engineering, TU Graz, Austria, 30 ECTS credits
  • Advanced Cybersecurity and Software Assurance, DTU, Denmark, 30 ECTS credits
  • Cryptography, UT, Estonia, 30 ECTS credits
  • Big Data Security, EURECOM, France, 30 ECTS credits

International Activities

CYBERSURE is inherently an international program, as studies are conducted at two different universities in two different countries. Additionally, CYBERSURE students and alumni form a very international group, and a large number of courses are taught by international professors. The program provides students with in-depth experience of working and studying in several countries in an international environment.

Further Studies

The program provides eligibility for scientific postgraduate studies in Finland. The skills taught in the program create an excellent foundation for doctoral studies at Aalto University, another Finnish university, or international top universities. Doctors who have graduated from Aalto University continue to, among other things, research or other academic careers or high business positions.

Career Opportunities

There is a shortage of experts in Europe and worldwide who can develop secure products and services with guarantees of reliable function and security.

Studies in CYBERSURE provide skills for international R&D assignments in industry, security technology and consulting, various expert roles, and doctoral studies. Students are encouraged to take internships where they work in a real R&D environment or expert organization as members of a project team.

Research Focus

Teaching in the program is closely linked to high-quality research conducted at the involved institutions of the seven universities in the consortium.

Collaboration with Other Actors

Collaboration with CYBERSURE's associated members (currently more than 17 companies and research organizations) has a significant impact on the program's activities. The possibility of summer internships makes students familiar with the European ICT industry and supports the development of students' professional skills.

Aalto University is one of the top universities in the world in terms of industry collaboration. Our graduates can benefit from our contacts.
