The Bachelor's Programme in Economics provides students with tools and knowledge to understand and explain current phenomena in the world from an economic perspective. We are looking for analytical, curious, and internationally oriented students who share our passion for understanding how societies function.

Programme Description
The programme introduces students to the field of economics through basic studies in economics and quantitative methods. A strong focus is placed on mathematics during the first year. The second year deepens students' understanding of economics, and they choose a minor according to their interests. The third year is dedicated to elective courses and the bachelor's seminar, during which students write their bachelor's thesis under the supervision of a member of the academic staff.
Language of Instruction
The language of instruction for the Bachelor's Programme in Economics is English. If the student so wishes, they can complete some elective courses or minor studies in Finnish.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
The tuition fee for this programme is 12,000 euros per year. Tuition fees are not charged from citizens of countries within the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA), or Switzerland. Citizens of other countries are required to pay tuition fees.
Aalto University offers a small number of scholarships that exempt students who are liable to pay tuition fees from paying them. Scholarships can be granted to the best-performing applicants based on the evaluation criteria of the admission option.
Structure of Studies
The Bachelor's Programme in Economics lasts three years and comprises a total of 180 credits. The programme is designed for full-time studies, and it is based mainly on on-campus teaching.
During the first year, students are introduced to the major subject through basic studies in economics and quantitative methods. A strong emphasis is placed on mathematics during the year.
The second year deepens students' understanding of economics, and they choose a minor according to their interests. The studies include mathematics and programming at the School of Science.
The third year is dedicated to elective courses and the bachelor's seminar, during which students write their bachelor's thesis under the supervision of a member of the academic staff. There is also room for international experience during the programme by spending one semester abroad at one of Aalto's partner universities.
Specialisations
After completing the basic studies, students prepare their personal study plan with the help of a professor. The study plan helps students to plan their studies and make choices according to their interests, goals, and life situation.
International Studies

Students in the Economics Bachelor's Programme gain internationally recognized qualifications and knowledge that provides an excellent foundation for an international career or further academic work at leading universities worldwide. As part of their studies, students have the opportunity to spend one semester abroad at one of Aalto's partner universities.
Career Opportunities
Studies in economics open up opportunities for a career in large national and international institutions that require rigorous analytical thinking and data analysis. Graduates from the Master's Programme in Economics typically become analysts, consultants, advisors, policymakers, or researchers as their first jobs. Potential employers are the European Central Bank, the Ministry of Finance, large data-driven tech companies, and non-governmental organizations.
Research Focus
The research at the Department of Economics is particularly focused on economics related to competition and innovation, labor markets, energy and the environment, cities and urban economics, mechanism design, and microeconomic theory.
Collaboration
The Bachelor's Programme in Economics includes a wide range of sub-disciplines. Consequently, the programme provides an excellent foundation for further studies in economics or other quantitatively oriented disciplines. The programme collaborates closely with the School of Science.
The programme is also part of Helsinki GSE – The Best in Economics Combined, which brings together Aalto University, Hanken, and the University of Helsinki. Students have the opportunity to interact with students from other universities and can include studies from outside Aalto University in their elective studies.
Campus and Student Life
Aalto University is located in Otaniemi, ten minutes from the center of Helsinki. The newly built campus area with its modern facilities is located in a natural setting and serves as a cozy base for more than 12,000 students. These active people meet not only during their studies but also at a wide range of extracurricular events and activities. There are hundreds of different, active clubs and organizations for students in the fields of culture, sports, and other hobbies. There is something for everyone, either as a participant or an organizer. In general, daily campus life is filled with inspiring encounters between students, professors, staff, and companies looking for employees.
The Bachelor's Programme in Economics also welcomes you to an inspiring and warm student community. Our student organization, Aalto University Business Students (KY), offers numerous hobbies, experiences, and lifelong friendships as a counterbalance to studies. Each major also has its own subject association, through which you can get to know students in the same major outside of courses.
