Aalto University's Open University provides an opportunity for students to study and potentially gain admission to the university without taking the entrance exam.


Open University Path: An Alternative to Entrance Exams

The Open University path allows students to study and complete courses that can lead to admission to Aalto University. This path is available for both economics and technology fields.


General Information about the Open University Path

  • Students can start their studies at any time.
  • Students must apply separately for each course within the Open University path.
  • Application periods are specified in the course descriptions.
  • Courses can be found using the search function or by visiting the Open University path's website.
  • Course enrollment is done through Sisu.
  • Some courses have limited spots, and enrollment is based on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • The Open University path is only available for defined bachelor's programs in economics and technology.
  • Students who need guidance can contact the Open University for support.

Open University Path in Economics

  • Degree title: Bachelor/Master of Science in Economics
  • Language of instruction: Finnish (some courses in English)
  • Fee: maximum 20 per credit
  • 42 credits
  • No time limit, but individual course credits are valid for 7 years
  • Application period: once a year in the spring
  • The weighted average of the studies must be at least 3.50 (on a scale of 1-5).
  • Students with the best average grade can be admitted through the Open University path, with a limited number of study places available.

Open University Path in Technology

  • Based on studies in the Open University path, students can apply to several different degree programs in technology.
  • Degree title: Bachelor/Master of Science in Technology
  • Language of instruction: Finnish or Swedish
  • Fee: maximum 20 per credit
  • 27 credits
  • There is a maximum of 365 days between the completion dates of the first and last course.
  • The weighted average of the studies must be at least 3.0 (on a scale of 1-5), although some programs may have a higher threshold.
  • Application periods: spring and fall
  • All students who have completed the Open University path studies (and meet the threshold criteria) can be admitted.

Becoming a Degree Student in the Field of Technology through Open University Studies

The technological university path studies (27 credits) provide an opportunity to be admitted as a degree student at Aalto University without entrance exams and regardless of previous educational background.
