European Mining Course, Master of Science (Technology)
Program Overview
European Mining Course, Master of Science (Technology)
Program Description
The European Mining Course (EMC) is a two-year master's program that aims to educate experts with comprehensive skills and competencies to meet the growing demand for mineral-based materials. The program focuses on providing top-notch education using economically and ecologically sustainable systems and technology.
Language of Instruction
The language of instruction for the program is English.
Tuition Fees and Scholarships
The program fee for EMC is 17,000 euros per academic year. Citizens of EU, EEA, or Switzerland are exempt from paying the program fee. A limited number of scholarships are available to cover part of the program fee for students who are required to pay it.
Program Structure
The EMC program is organized in international cooperation between three leading European universities in mining and resource technology: Aalto University (Finland), Technical University of Leoben (Austria), and RWTH Aachen University (Germany). The program is built on the strengths and complementary areas of expertise of these universities in geoscientific studies and research.
Curriculum
The program offers a unique curriculum that includes courses in mining engineering, mineral processing, recycling, business and economics, management, and safety issues. Excursions and visits are arranged in cooperation with partner companies as an addition to lectures. Assignments and case studies are based on real data and worked on in teams.
Specialization Options
The program is a cohesive entity that all students complete together. The master's thesis (possibly in industrial cooperation) is an opportunity to specialize and, depending on the topic of the thesis, graduate from either Aalto University's School of Engineering or School of Chemical Engineering.
International Activities
Aalto University is international by nature and welcomes thousands of students from abroad for degree and exchange studies every year. The students are united in the diverse Aalto community, not only through studies but also through various leisure activities, events, and festivals on campus.
Career Opportunities
Graduates from the program have promising career opportunities due to the global demand for professionals in mining and mineral technology. They are employed in industry, government organizations, and research institutions, and are placed in key positions ranging from research, teaching, and consulting to management, design, project planning, and control.
Research Focus
EMC students get to work with leading experts in the field, such as:
- Aalto University: Professor Mikael Rinne (School of Engineering) and Professor Rodrigo Serna (School of Chemical Engineering)
- RWTH Aachen: Professor Bernd Lottermoser
- Montanuniversität Leoben: Professor Nikolaus Sifferlinger
Collaboration with Other Actors
The European Mining Course has a long history dating back to 1996 and has evolved over the years. Through the years, the program has remained a close cooperation between partner universities with strong support from industry. The EMC alumni network has grown over the years to over 800 members.
Further Studies
Graduates from the program become masters of science in technology from Aalto University, providing an excellent basis for further studies and work as a researcher at Aalto University or internationally. Additionally, the student receives corresponding degrees from the two other universities, RWTH Aachen University and Technical University of Leoben, broadening international study and career opportunities.
