Program Overview


Master's Programme in Film and Television

The Master's Programme in Film and Television is a 120-credit degree that consists of major studies, elective studies, and a master's thesis. The programme aims to provide students with good theoretical and general knowledge of film and television, as well as artistic and practical expertise in their field of study.


Structure

The programme is structured into the following components:


  • Major studies: 60 credits
  • Elective studies: 30 credits
  • Master's thesis: 30 credits

Aims of the Master of Arts (Art and Design) Degree

The aim of the degree is to provide students with:


  1. Good theoretical and general knowledge of film and television, as well as artistic and practical expertise in their field of study.
  2. Knowledge and skills needed for independent and demanding artistic work and for multidisciplinary collaboration.
  3. Knowledge and skills to perform, both independently and collaboratively, demanding expert, development, and management duties of the field.
  4. Knowledge and skills needed for education leading to a Doctor of Arts (Art and Design) degree and for lifelong learning.
  5. Good language and communication skills for work in the field of arts and for international operations and cooperation.

Majors of the Master's Degree Programme in Film and Television

There are nine majors with separate degree requirements in the Master's Degree Programme in Film and Television:

  • Costume Design

Major Studies

Each major has its own set of compulsory and elective courses. The major studies are designed to provide students with in-depth knowledge and skills in their chosen field.


Elective Studies

Students can choose 30 credits of elective studies from a range of courses offered by the programme or other programmes at Aalto University.


Master's Thesis

The master's thesis is a 30-credit component of the programme that allows students to demonstrate their mastery of the field and their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice.


Language Study Requirements

Students are required to complete language studies as part of their degree. The language requirements vary depending on the student's background and the programme they are enrolled in.


Elective Art and Theory Studies

The programme offers a range of elective art and theory studies that allow students to explore different aspects of film and television production, including drawing and painting, colour and perception, sculpture, printmaking, art history and theory, and contemporary art.


Majors

Documentary Film

The major in Documentary Film aims to form innovative, critical, and analytical documentary filmmakers for both the national and international arenas. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the history and conventions of documentary filmmaking, as well as the skills needed to develop their own artistic vision and style.


Film Sound Design

The major in Film Sound Design trains artists and professionals to work as sound designers and sound recordists in all areas of film production. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of film sound design, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Screenwriting

The major in Screenwriting aims to develop students' skills in writing for film and television. Students will learn about the craft of screenwriting, including story structure, character development, and dialogue writing, as well as the business and legal aspects of the industry.


Film and Television Producing

The major in Film and Television Producing aims to develop students' skills in producing film and television content. Students will learn about the business and legal aspects of the industry, as well as the creative and technical aspects of producing.


Production Design

The major in Production Design focuses on training artistic designers who are responsible for the visual, operational, and productional entity of a film and TV productions. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of production design, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Film Editing

The major in Film Editing aims to develop students' skills in editing film and television content. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of film editing, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Film Directing

The major in Film Directing aims to develop students' skills in directing film and television content. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of film directing, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Cinematography

The major in Cinematography aims to develop students' skills in cinematography for film and television. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of cinematography, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Costume Design

The major in Costume Design focuses on training students to become visionary costume designers. Students will learn about the artistic, technical, and production aspects of costume design, as well as the latest technologies and trends in the field.


Master's Thesis

The master's thesis is a 30-credit component of the programme that allows students to demonstrate their mastery of the field and their ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice.
