Course Information

Learning Outcomes

Upon completing the course, students will be able to:

• Introduce themselves and discuss their background and current situation
• Manage everyday situations in Finnish
• Write short messages
• Understand common vocabulary and phrases
• Learn about Finnish customs

Content

The course will cover basic vocabulary and grammatical structures of Finnish, including:

• Partitive and genitive cases
• Verb types 1-5
• Possessives
• Practice situations for everyday tasks and social interactions

Teacher

The course will be taught by Nelli Karkkunen.

Study Material

The required textbook is "Oma Suomi 1" by Terhi Tapaninen and Kristiina Kuparinen (2022 edition, ISBN: 978-951-1-44826-6). Additional materials will be provided by the teacher.

Workload

The course consists of:

• 36 hours of teaching in a group setting
• 57 hours of independent work

Prerequisites

No prior knowledge of Finnish is required.

Evaluation

To pass the course, students must:

• Attend classes regularly
• Participate actively in class
• Complete homework assignments
• Pass a written and oral examination

Teaching Time and Location

The course will be taught online on Mondays and Wednesdays from 16:30 to 18:00. There will be no teaching from 16.2.2026 to 18.2.2026.

Exams

• The examination will be held on 23.3.2026.
• The re-examination will be held on 20.4.2026.
• Exams will be conducted remotely in MyCourses.

Online Learning Environment

The course will use MyCourses as the online learning environment. Students need an Aalto User ID to access the course workspace and participate in teaching.

Registration and Course Fee

Registration for the course is done online, and the course fee is paid upon registration. The fee is binding, and registration is not possible before or after the registration period.

Activating Aalto ID and Multifactor Authentication

Students can activate their Aalto User ID the day after registration and must do so no later than the day before the course starts. Multifactor authentication must also be enabled.
