Course Information

Learning Outcomes

At the completion of the course, students will be able to:

• Talk about the main features of their daily life
• Function in routine situations and make common enquiries
• Understand and produce short written messages about situations in their day of working or studying
• Find the main information they need from short texts on course themes
• Know some of the main features of Finnish everyday life and work

Content

The course will cover:

• Expanding vocabulary related to everyday life and work (e.g., food, travel, expressions of time)
• Expanding knowledge of the grammatical structures of Finnish (locative cases, taytyy, parts of speech)
• Practising situations related to everyday tasks and social life (shopping, medical visits)

The course will be taught by Laura Tuominen.

Study Material

The required textbook is "Oma Suomi 1" by Terhi Tapaninen and Kristiina Kuparinen (2022 edition, ISBN: 978-951-1-44826-6). Additional material will be provided by the teacher.

Workload

The course consists of 36 hours of teaching and 57 hours of independent work.

Prerequisites

Students are required to have completed Finnish 1 (ALC-7210) or equivalent.

Evaluation

The course requires regular attendance, active participation in class, and completion of homework assignments. The final grade will be based on a written examination and an oral test.

Teaching Time and Location

The course will be taught online on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 17.00-18.30. No teaching will take place during 13-19.10.2025.

Exams

Written and Oral Examination

The course examination will be held on 12.11.2025, with a re-examination on 4.12.2025. Students must register for the exam in Sisu by 27.11.2025.

The teacher will provide further information on examinations. The oral examination time will be given by the teacher.

Online Learning Environment

The course will use the MyCourses online learning environment for communication and managing everyday course work. Students need an Aalto User ID to log in to the course's MyCourses workspace and participate in teaching.

Registration and Course Fee

Registration for the course is done via the Open University course registration link. The course fee is paid upon registration and is binding.

Activating Aalto ID and Multifactor Authentication

Students can activate their Aalto User ID the day after registration and must do so no later than the day before the start of the course. Multifactor authentication must also be enabled.
