Program Overview

Master "Histoire transnationale"

The Master's program in "Histoire transnationale" (Transnational History) is offered by the Université PSL and is part of the "Histoire" (History) mention. This program is designed to train students in the theory and practice of transnational history, which has become a major field of study in the past twenty years.

Presentation

The program is led by the École nationale des chartes - PSL and the École normale supérieure - PSL. Transnational history is an open approach that seeks to question traditional boundaries and categorizations. It focuses on mobilities and circulations (of people, ideas, objects, texts, and works of art), the history of globalizations, interactions, and connections.

Curriculum

The program is taught on two sites: the École nationale des chartes - PSL (65, rue de Richelieu, Paris 2e) and the ENS (45, rue d'Ulm, Paris 5e). The Master's program is affiliated with the Translitteræ graduate program.

Responsibilities

The program is led by:

  • Pedagogical Directors: Hélène Blais and Olivier Canteaut
  • Administrative Directors: Sophie Tissandier (ENS) and Julien Cassefieres and Sylvain Métafiot (ENC)

Scolarité

The program is designed to allow students to articulate the demands of empirical research with the inscription of their objects in a broader perspective. The curriculum includes:

  • A core program that provides students with historical and methodological references. Particular importance is given to training in archival research on a global scale and in digital humanities.
  • Specialization, both geographical and thematic, is ensured by at least two specific seminars.
  • Interdisciplinarity is another structuring principle of the program, with an offer of seminars in anthropology, history of art, sociology, geography, literature, philosophy.
  • The international dimension is privileged. Students are strongly encouraged to conduct research stays on their terrain and to spend a semester in a partner university abroad offering a transnational studies program.
