Doctoral Program at the École Nationale des Chartes - PSL

The École Nationale des Chartes - PSL offers a doctoral program, awarded by the Université PSL, in its fields of excellence: history, art history, ancient and Romance languages and literatures. The program is open to its graduates (diploma of archivist paleographer, master's degree) as well as to students from other institutions, including those from abroad.

Admission Criteria

To be admitted to the doctoral program, candidates must hold a master's degree or equivalent. The program is designed for students who wish to conduct research in the following areas:

Doctoral Program Structure

The doctoral program is affiliated with the École doctorale 472 of the EPHE and the École doctorale d'histoire moderne et contemporaine of Sorbonne Université. Doctoral students are attached to the research laboratory of the École, the Centre Jean-Mabillon.

Tuition Fees

The tuition fee for the academic year is 397 euros (reduced rate: 264 euros). Students must also pay a student life and campus contribution (CVEC) of 105 euros.

Registration and Réinscription

Registration is mandatory and annual. Students must download their payment certificate (or exemption) from the CVEC website and provide the certificate number during online registration.

Codirection and Cotutelle

The École Nationale des Chartes - PSL offers codirection and cotutelle options for doctoral students. Codirection involves two directors of thesis from one or two French institutions, while cotutelle involves two directors from different countries.

Codirection

• The objective of codirection is to provide double scientific expertise for the thesis.
• The student is under the control and responsibility of one director of thesis.
• The scientific direction of the doctoral project can be jointly ensured with a codirector from another French institution.

Cotutelle

• The objective of cotutelle is to establish and develop scientific cooperation between French and foreign research teams.
• Cotutelle aims to facilitate the mobility of doctoral students between France and abroad.
• The student is registered at both the École des chartes and a foreign institution, with an exemption from tuition fees in one of the two institutions.

Doctorat sur Travaux for Conservators

The École des chartes offers a Doctorat sur Travaux for conservators, which aims to formalize and deepen research conducted in the context of their functions. This program is open to conservators of heritage and libraries (French or foreign).

Admission Criteria

• A detailed CV
• A note of synthesis presenting the candidate's previous research
• A letter motivating the application for the doctorate
• Copies of the candidate's most significant works (published or not)
• A letter of commitment from the professor who will direct the thesis

Scolarité

The candidate will defend their doctorate by presenting their dossier of works and a synthesis memo. The memo (30-100 pages) will be written during the year of registration, in close relation with the director of thesis.

Doctoral Program Duration

Defense of Thesis

The defense of thesis is unique and takes place at the end of the doctoral program. The thesis is evaluated by a jury composed of at least four members.
