Description

"Introduction to tantric traditions This master's course aims to introduce students to the emergence, historical development and spread of tantric currents, both Hindu and Buddhist, across Asia.

After addressing the challenges of defining Tantrism as a religious and cultural phenomenon in the first sessions, we updated current research on Tantrism. We then examined the evolution of tantric practices of atimārga, as well as the traditions of mantramārga Shaivism (Śaiva Siddhānta, Bhairavamārga, Kaula, Trika, Krama, etc.) and tantric Buddhism (mantranaya, vajrayāna) in the Indian subcontinent during the Middle Ages. The course concluded with a series of presentations on the spread, across maritime routes, of Tantric Buddhism in monsoon Asia (particularly in the coastal regions of India, Sri Lanka, Indochina, Insulin, China and Japan).
