Program Overview

Ukraine: Gastdoktorat (Schutzstatus S)

The University of Basel offers a special guest doctoral program for doctoral students from Ukraine. This program is designed to support Ukrainian doctoral students who have been affected by the current situation in their country.

1. Study Offer

A overview of the doctoral programs offered by the individual faculties and institutes can be found in the information sheet "Doktorate an den Fakultäten/Instituten". Information can also be found under "Promotionsfacher" or on the websites of the individual faculties.

2. Admission Requirements for the Guest Doctorate

The following admission requirements apply to the special guest doctorate for doctoral students from Ukraine:

  • Proof of protection status S
  • Proof of enrollment on a doctoral level in a related field at a recognized Ukrainian university
  • Confirmation of a first supervisor at the University of Basel (see point 3)

The admission to the guest doctorate is usually limited to three semesters. Guest doctoral students generally enjoy the same rights at the University of Basel as regular doctoral students (e.g., attending courses, taking exams including earning credit points, receiving a UNIcard and a university email address), but they cannot earn academic degrees. The registration fee and semester fees are waived for the duration of the guest doctorate. A later change to the regular doctorate is not currently planned.

3. First Supervisor

Admission to the guest doctorate requires that a qualified professor at the University of Basel takes over supervision and confirms this in writing. The respective faculty can assist in finding a suitable supervisor. The relevant contact points can be found in the information sheet "Doktorate an den Fakultäten/Instituten".

4. Creating a User Account for the Application Portal

Before you can register, you must first create a user account. After logging in, you will immediately receive an email from the University of Basel's admissions office with a link to activate your portal access. Make sure to check your spam folder if you haven't received an email. Ensure that you are reachable at the specified email address during the entire admission process. Messages and documents from the university related to your application will always be delivered via the application portal. You will receive a notification at your email address.

5. Creating an Application

After creating a user account, you can submit your application for the guest doctorate using an online form in the application portal. The application is done in 6 steps. We recommend filling out the individual registers one after the other, as there are content-related dependencies. You can interrupt the application at any time and continue it at a later time. In the online form, you will be asked to provide information about your previous education (high school, universities, etc.) and personal data, and to upload the required documents.

6. Translations

For documents in Ukrainian, a translation into German or English should be attached. This does not have to be an official translation. You can do this yourself if necessary. The translation will then be reviewed internally by the university.

7. Completion of the Application / Registration Fee

The University of Basel waives the registration fee (CHF 100) for the special guest status for doctoral students from Ukraine. To take advantage of this offer, you must proceed as follows:

  • Complete the application (all checkboxes except for payment must be green)
  • Send a request via the support form in the application portal with the keyword "Gastdoktorat Ukraine"

Your application will be completed by the admissions office. You will then receive a confirmation of receipt.
