Supervising Students - Dealing with Roles and Relationships (26F05020)

Description

Learn about different techniques to be an effective supervisor in the university setting. The course covers various approaches to supervision, treating it as a relationship, project, or process. It discusses how cultural backgrounds impact supervision complexity and reflects on practices to make the supervisory role clearer and easier for both the supervisor and the students.


Requirements for Certificate of Completion

  • Minimum attendance time at the class: 80%
  • Successful completion of all self-study assignments

Objectives

  • The participants can analyze supervision from three perspectives: relationship, project, and process.
  • The participants can develop practical skills in task formulation, role definition, and effective guiding.
  • The participants can develop strategies for managing relationships, addressing conflicts, and refining their supervisory roles.

Course Content

The course approaches the supervision process from three different perspectives, with a main focus on the relationship context.


  1. Project Context
  • Project characteristics and outlines
  • Formulating tasks within the (research) project (with a peer feedback exercise)
  • Roles and functions within the project
  1. Process Context
  • Key features of effective guiding/supervising processes
  • Providing feedback (with a role-play exercise)
  1. Relationship Context
  • Framework for role conflicts, role overlaps, role diversity (with an exercise on supervisors' responsibilities)
  • Defining one's role
  • Problem-solving strategies

Target Audience

Members of the University of Basel (including PhD students and lecturers who habilitate at the University of Basel) with at least a Master's Degree who are involved in undergraduate teaching at the University of Basel.
